Trent Race Marnham
12th/13th June

This year saw the return of the River Trent charity race. The event has been run a number of times over the past ten years, and in that time has raised some £10,000 for various charities. All proceeds from this year’s event are going to the Make a Wish Foundation. The event is run and staged by the Marnham Boat Club, based at the tranquil Brownlow Arms at High Marnham.
The weekend involves social skiers and ski racers alike, as the Saturday’s ski down the river is purely a social event rounded off in the evening with live music and plenty of dancing. The course down the river starts off rather windy and takes you through the town of Gainsborough, behond Gainsborough the river starts to open up until after some 37 miles from the start you arrive at the halfway point at Keadby lock. For the ski racers taking part on the Sunday, the event was ran under the usual race conditions. However, due to the nature of the course boats are started on grids of two and each team is timed individually. When all the teams have completed the 37 mile stretch of the river, they are timed back to the start. The conditions on the day were superb with all teams able to ski to their limit.

Due to the speeds and numbers of boats that take part over the two days, permission is needed from British Waterways and the Associated British Ports Authority to allow the event to go ahead. Without their support and the dedication of the event organizers to provide safety boats, launch and recovery vehicles and paramedics, this unique event would not be possible. So many thanks to Steve and Mark Mennell, John Morely and all the other countless volunteers at the Marnham Boat Club for making this event a huge success!
